Beginner's Guide to Wakesurfing in Dubai
24 March 2026 · Wavee
Wakesurfing is the fastest-growing watersport in the UAE, and for good reason. It is easier to learn than wakeboarding, more relaxed, and the feeling of riding a wave without a rope is addictive. If you have never tried it, Dubai is one of the best places in the world to start.
What is wakesurfing
Wakesurfing means riding the wave created by a moving boat — without being attached to a rope. The boat is weighted with ballast to produce a large, clean wave behind it. You use a rope to get up and into position, then drop it and surf the wave freestyle.
The boat travels at 15-18 km/h, much slower than wakeboarding. This makes falls softer and the overall experience more forgiving for beginners.
What you need
The provider supplies everything:
- Wakesurf board — wider and more buoyant than a wakeboard, with no bindings
- Life jacket — always required
- Tow rope — shorter than a wakeboarding rope, used only for the start
You just need to show up in swimwear with sunscreen and a towel.
How to get up (the deep water start)
This is the hardest part, and it usually takes 2-4 attempts on your first try:
- Float on your back in the water, board in front of you, feet on the board, knees to chest
- Hold the rope with both hands, arms straight
- The boat accelerates slowly — resist the urge to pull yourself up
- Let the board rotate under you — the boat does the work
- Stand up gradually once the board is planing — knees bent, weight on your back foot
- Find the wave — the crew will guide you into the sweet spot
The key mistake beginners make is trying to muscle up with their arms. Stay patient, keep your arms straight, and let the boat pull you onto the board.
How to drop the rope
Once you are standing and riding comfortably behind the boat, the crew will tell you to move closer to the boat. This puts you deeper into the wave where it has more push.
When you feel the wave supporting you — when the rope goes slack in your hands — toss it gently towards the boat. You are now wakesurfing.
Most beginners achieve this in their first session. Some get it on the first try. Do not be discouraged if it takes a few attempts.
Tips for your first session
- Book a morning session — flat water makes everything easier
- Start with 60 minutes — plenty of time to get up and ride
- Listen to the crew — they can see your position relative to the wave better than you can
- Keep your weight back — front-footing the board is the most common fall
- Relax — tension in your legs and arms makes balance harder
- Bring water — you will be more dehydrated than you expect
Where to wakesurf in Dubai
Not every boat is set up for wakesurfing. The boat needs an inboard engine (no exposed propeller) and a ballast system to create the wave. On Wavee, filter by the "Wakesurf" activity to see only boats with the right setup.
The best spots for beginners are sheltered areas with flat water:
- Dubai Creek — calm, sheltered, minimal boat traffic early morning
- Al Jaddaf — similar conditions to the Creek, competitive pricing
- Dubai Marina — convenient but busier, go early for flat water

Find wakesurfing sessionsHow much does it cost
Wakesurfing sessions cost the same as wakeboarding — typically 450-700 AED per hour depending on the boat and time slot. Pricing is per session, not per person. Bring a friend and take turns — you will not be riding the entire time anyway, and watching from the boat is half the fun.
After your first session
If you are hooked — and most people are — here is what to work on in your next few sessions:
- Stay on the wave longer — build comfort riding without the rope
- Move forward and back on the wave — this controls your speed
- Try switching stance — ride both regular and switch (goofy)
- Carve — turn the board back and forth across the face of the wave
- Add a pump — generate speed by weighting and unweighting the board
Dubai's warm water and year-round season mean you can progress quickly. Many riders go from first-timer to comfortable surfer within 4-5 sessions.
